Stritch School of Medicine Bioethics Interest Group (B.I.G)
Mission Statement
The goals of the Bioethics Interest Group (B.I.G.) are to
foster awareness of ethical issues in clinical practice and social policy, assist in
preparing future medical professionals to deal with ethical dilemmas they will encounter,
and create a forum for discussion and analysis to aid in personal reflection on medical
ethics and the social responsibilities of the medical profession.
B.I.G. achieves these aims by sponsoring speakers and discussions on topics related to
clinical ethics and just allocation of resources. B.I.G. works collaboratively with other student organizations to promote action aimed at
appropriate social reforms in the health care system. Issues related to uninsured and
underserved patient populations, the responsible administration of financing and
delivering all aspects of health care from primary care to prescription pharmaceuticals,
and health care as an international human right are considered. End-of-life care, informed
consent, international and national research on human subjects, and cross-cultural ethics
are also issues addressed by this organization.
