The Neiswanger
Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy introduced the Online
Graduate Programs in Bioethics and Health Policy in 2002. Our highly regarded
graduate programs have provided hundreds of healthcare professionals
with the education and tools they need since the program inception.

Why
an online graduate degree in bioethics?
Bioethics is an innovative new field.
Whether you are a physician, nurse, health care administrator,
lawyer, clergyperson, academic, or advanced student, formal
knowledge of bioethics is increasingly important. Similarly, healthcare institutions in the U.S. and around the world need
professionals who can analyze ethics cases and policies, facilitate
ethical decision-making, and effectively teach colleagues and
students. 
To meet this need, the Neiswanger
Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy offers the Online Master
of Arts and a Certificate Program in Clinical Bioethics and Health
Policy.

The Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics
and Health Policy at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine is a pluralistic bioethics institute that draws upon the commitment to
social justice of the Jesuit and Roman Catholic heritage of the Stritch School of Medicine in its teaching,
research, and service. The Institute promotes the ideals of Jesuit
education in seeking to form “men and women for others” and
to make our classrooms a “home for all faiths.” Thus, while giving special regard to Catholic
healthcare ethics in teaching and research, the Institute also fosters respectful dialogue among all
traditions represented in our student body and patient population.
The Neiswanger Institute serves the
Stritch School of Medicine students, Loyola University
Health System clinicians, healthcare professionals from Catholic
and nonsectarian healthcare systems across the nation, and medical
educators in the United States through educational programming,
timely conceptual and empirical research, and case consultation.
Two things distinguish the Neiswanger
Institute:
- A commitment to educating
health-care professionals to be effective leaders for social
justice in medicine and society, and;
- A commitment to
understanding and respecting the role of religious and
spiritual traditions, especially that of the school’s Roman
Catholic heritage, in health-care decision making.
 The primary values of the Neiswanger
Institute, a regard for social justice and a commitment to understanding the roles of religion and
spirituality on medicine, give rise to a research and teaching focus for institute faculty
that includes addressing racial and ethnic disparities in
healthcare, fostering cultural humility
and competence, contributing to global health, promoting public health, and advocating
a renewal of medical professionalism that evidences a concern for the common good.

The
Neiswanger Institute’s Faculty
The
faculty members of the Neiswanger Institute come from a variety
of disciplines including
medicine, law, canon law, medical humanities, philosophy, public health, and theology.
All have significant
experience in clinical ethics and are nationally recognized as
educational innovators in bioethics. Our
faculty members possess a wealth of knowledge but the unique aspect of the faculty is their
appreciation of the contribution of our students to the learning
environment. As a result, our
faculty share a commitment to fostering dialogue among participants
in the courses and helping each student to refine his or her
knowledge and interpersonal skill sets in bioethics.
Our location and flexibility of our
online technology provides our program with access and the
privilege of presenting the most experienced contributing faculty
in bioethics, medical
education, law and health policy. Our program courses will
also provide exposure to honored
speakers from lectures, grand rounds and nationally renowned
bioethics and medical
conferences.

Ethics
Consultation Simulation Seminar
 This elective seminar is for everyone who
sits on
an
ethics committee and wants to do consults doesn’t feel qualified, and everyone who has been doing them
for
years but wonders whether they could be doing
better. This seminar employs the faculty and professional
“standardized patients,” as well
as our extensive digital technology at one of the Chicago areas most
advanced
and innovative medical simulation facilities located at the Loyola
University Chicago Stritch
School of Medicine, to simulate ethics consultations, practice
communication and interaction
skills, and provide constructive feedback to the seminar
participants.

Organizational
Ethics
These courses, Business, Professionalism & Justice
and Ethical Leadership for a Changing
Healthcare Environment examine ethical issues in
health care from the vantage point of decision makers who shape the
system, e.g., physicians within a group practice, administrators
within a health system, or advocates within a community, along with
the theory, role, and elements of
leadership that effectively serve non-profit healthcare systems. Each course
is a month-long hybrid of
online learning and a few-day intensive experience on the campus
of Loyola University Medical Center (Maywood, IL).
